Sylvia and Dave initially reached out to me to document their birth. They decided that they wanted to tell the whole story from the pregnancy to the birth and then the whole family. We did a maternity session at their home in the midst of remodel. Dave is a musician and Sylvia was classically trained as an opera singer. I got a private concert as Dave played the piano and they sang together. These two make beautiful music together and one handsome baby boy!
The birth started out at a birthing center. The room was simple and sparse. A big birthing tub sat by the window. Sylvia got in it and as each painful contraction came and went, she was completely present. Calm, listening to her body, dancing with the waves of labor. She was strong. The midwife had checked how dilated she was. 7 Centimeters. Hours later, she checked again. No progress. The midwife broke her water. After several more hours of laboring with no progress, it was time to go to the hospital.
Sylvia had a c-section after 16 more hours of laboring in the hospital. Baby Shepherd was born at 9:30pm on October 23, 2016.
